Finding a safe crib net for your baby or toddler is important. Learn why bed nets are an essential item on the smart parent's list of purchases to make!
Crib Nets and Tents are Safe!
Cases do exist where babies or toddlers are hurt on crib nets and crib tents. However, you can pick any random item from your house and I can gaurantee you there is a case for a baby getting hurt on it as well. Don't let this type of anxiety stop you from doing what is right and buying a crib net for your child. As long as you purchase a safe crib net, install it correctly, and use it the right way you will be fine!
Crib Net or Toddler Bed?
It can be a tough decision... should you transfer to the toddler bed or just buy a crib net? To be honest, it depends on what your toddler likes to get into. I know that toddlers sometimes like to play with electrical sockets. What if your toddler gets up from his nap in his toddler bed while you are still sleeping (or in the bathroom, washing dishes, etc.) and decides to play with the electrical outlet? In this case, I would suggest using a crib net so that you can supervise the child at all times! You will have to buy a toddler bed eventually - but there is no need to rush this transition. Many parents feel the need to compete with their friends as if everything involving toddlers is a race. It is not a race, the safety of your child is much more important than anyones opinions, commentary, or pressure.

Velcro or Zipper Crib Nets?
Before the tragic cases on the news involving baby crib nets came to scare parents away from using them, zippers were common on many baby accessories. However, this has changed and baby accessories now use velcro for safety purposes. Velcro is absolutely the safest way to go when it comes to baby crib nets. Zippers may be used to fasten the main flap together so the child cannot jump out of the crib, but that can be expected. You have a while to go before you can stop worrying about that!
Some Stores No Longer Carry Bed Nets
It is true that some stores have stopped carrying bed nets (I will not mention these stores here, but you can open the phone book and call around to see for yourself). This is largely due to a fire hazard. For example, imagine that a fire started in your house and your baby was inside the crib having a nap. You run to get your child but cannot take the net off of the crib to help the child out of the fire. In this example, I believe most parents would go ahead and tear the net right off and get out of that house as quickly as possible. The stores that no longer carry baby crib nets might as well stop carrying everything else that could potentially harm a child as well.

I have never heard of crib nets. Are these different from mesh-sided cribs?
